Details: Romanian Ministry of Defence said that at 01:05 on the night of 25-26 December, two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base in Fetești were scrambled to monitor the air situation in the border area with Ukraine in the north of Tulcea County.
The ministry's air surveillance system detected groups of drones launched by Russia towards Ukrainian ports on the Danube.
At 01:23, residents in the northern part of Tulcea County received an air-raid warning.
During the mission, the fighter jets did not record any incursions into Romania's national airspace. The aircraft returned to base and landed safely at 03:15.
Background:
- Romanian President Nicușor Dan said in late December, at the end of his visit to Paris, that Romania is ready to shoot down drones that violate the country's airspace.
- Romania's Supreme Council of National Defence in September completed the development of methodological frameworks for applying legislation on shooting down drones and military aircraft that violate the country's airspace.
- On 17 December, the Danube Commission, an organisation comprising representatives of Danube states, decided to establish a Register of Damage from Russian Aggression on the Lower Danube.
