Explosions in Russia's Adygea and alleged attack on military airfield reported

Explosions have been reported near the Khanskaya military airfield in Russia's Republic of Adygea, according to the Astra Telegram channel.

Quote: "On the night of 28-29 December, residents of Maykop (Adygea) reported explosions, with claims that the Khanskaya military airfield was under attack."

Details: The Russian Telegram channel said footage from eyewitnesses with sounds of gunfire and explosions had appeared online, and Astra geolocated one of the videos.

Quote: "The footage was filmed on Novaya Street in Maykop. The distance from the filming location to the Khanskaya airfield is approximately 6.5 kilometres. The footage shows air defence activity, but there is no confirmation that the airfield was hit.

An air defence position is located to the south-east of the runway of the airfield. The direction of fire is east-north-east."

For reference: The Khanskaya airfield is a military facility owned by Russia's Ministry of Defence in the Republic of Adygea. It is located approximately 3 km east of the settlement of Khanskaya and 6 km north-west of the city of Maykop. According to open-source data, an aviation training unit – the 272nd air base – is stationed there.

More details: On the morning of 29 December, Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed that overnight its air defences had allegedly downed 89 drones over Russian oblasts and the Sea of Azov, including 11 over Adygea.

According to Russia's Ministry of Defence, the largest number of drones were shot down over Russia's Bryansk Oblast – 49. In addition, 18 drones were allegedly downed over Novgorod Oblast, and seven over Krasnodar Krai and one over each of the Sea of Azov and Oryol, Rostov and Smolensk oblasts.
