Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said there are "unresolved issues" between Poland and Ukraine that need to be worked on.

Details: Nawrocki was asked whether the end of 2025 would mark a "new beginning" in relations between Poland and Ukraine.

"I firmly believe it will. President Zelenskyy's visit to Warsaw is proof that Ukraine cares about good relations with Poland. Our common strategic interest due to the threat from the Russian Federation is obvious – and this is one of the few issues that unites me, Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the current government," the Polish president replied.

Nawrocki said, however, that the new beginning must "mean partnership".

"This partnership is obvious in my interactions with President Zelenskyy, but for the first time, Poland's specific expectations with respect to Ukraine are also being conveyed," Nawrocki noted.

He stressed that his duty is "to speak on behalf of the Polish people, whether it's about Ukraine, Germany or Israel".

"There are unresolved issues in our relations with Ukraine, and as part of our partnership, I am asking that they be resolved," he added.

Background:

  • On 19 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Poland, where he met with Nawrocki. The Polish president said at the time that the issue of national memory was among the key issues discussed during his talks with Zelenskyy in Warsaw, adding that Poland hopes these issues will be resolved quickly.
  • Nawrocki also said Warsaw has not ruled out the possibility of "resolving the issue" regarding a potential transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine.
