Quote: "This morning, the United States carried out an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This causes deep concern and condemnation. We proceed from the fact that all partners who may have claims against one another must seek ways to resolve problems through dialogue.

We are ready to support them in this. Latin America must remain a zone of peace, as it declared itself in 2014. And Venezuela must be guaranteed the right to determine its own fate without any destructive, let alone military, interference from outside."

Details: Russia's Foreign Ministry said that Moscow also supports convening a UN Security Council meeting on Venezuela.

Background:

  • On the morning of 3 January, explosions were reported in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. A state of emergency has been declared in Venezuela over what authorities described as an "extremely serious military aggression carried out by the current government of the United States".
  • US President Donald Trump has said that his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolás Maduro and Maduro's wife had been captured and taken out of the country as part of a special operation.
