Details: What will happen next with Venezuela's leadership is still unclear, Trump said, but the US will govern the country until a clear and safe transfer of power occurs. He stressed this three times.
"We are going to run the country," Trump said. He stated that he does not want the Maduro regime to continue to exist under another leader.
"We are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition [of power – ed.]," Trump said.
Trump did not set any time limits for American governance of Venezuela. Decisions on when to return the country under Venezuela's control will be made by the United States.
As for oil, he said that American companies will repair the infrastructure and start making money for the country.
Background: Trump ordered strikes on targets in Venezuela, with the operation beginning on the night of 2 January. In response, Maduro accused the United States of military aggression. However, US forces later captured Maduro.
