At least 40 people have been killed as a result of a US attack on Venezuela early on Saturday, including military personnel and civilians.

Details: US President Donald Trump said that no American soldiers had been killed, but suggested that some service members had been injured.

General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that US helicopters moving to evacuate Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife came under fire. He stated that one helicopter was damaged but "remained flyable", and that all US aircraft "came home".

About half a dozen soldiers were injured during the overall operation to capture Maduro, two US officials said on condition of anonymity.

The New York Times also spoke with people who lost their homes as a result of the strikes.

  • On the morning of 3 January, explosions were reported in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. A state of emergency has been declared in Venezuela over what authorities described as an "extremely serious military aggression carried out by the current government of the United States".
  • Later, Trump said that Maduro and Maduro's wife had been captured and taken out of the country as part of the special operation.
