Germany's Merz: Ukraine is on brink of humanitarian energy crisis

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that Ukraine is "on the brink of a humanitarian energy crisis".

Details: Merz addressed the coalition parties ahead of a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris, stressing that Ukraine is "on the brink of a humanitarian energy crisis".
He believes that Putin is not seeking a ceasefire as the war enters its fourth winter. Instead, he has ordered what Merz described as the most serious attacks so far on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure. On this basis, Merz has accused the Russian leadership of committing war crimes.
The German government says it wants to bring the war to an end. However, Merz argues this will only be possible if Ukraine receives genuine security guarantees from both the United States and Europe.
Background:
- A meeting of leaders from the Coalition of the Willing is due to take place in Paris on Tuesday 6 January, where participants are expected to finalise security guarantees for Ukraine.
- The European Commission reiterated that the main security guarantee the European Union can offer Kyiv as a bloc is a clear perspective of Ukraine's future membership in the EU.
