White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has stated that Washington insists Greenland should become part of the US as part of the American security framework, and has not ruled out the possibility of taking the island by force.

Quote from Miller: "The president has been clear for months now that the United States should be the nation that has Greenland as part of our overall security apparatus."

"It has been the formal position of the US government since the beginning of this administration, frankly, going back into the previous Trump administration, that Greenland should be part of the United States. The president has been very clear about that. That is the formal position of the US government."

Details: CNN anchor Jake Tapper repeatedly asked Miller whether he could rule out a scenario in which the US attempts to seize Greenland by force. Miller avoided a direct answer, instead questioning the legitimacy of Denmark's control over the island.

Quotes from Miller: "The real question is by what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? What is the basis of their territorial claim? What is their basis of having Greenland as a colony of Denmark?"

"The United States is the power of NATO. For the United States to secure the Arctic region, to protect and defend NATO and NATO interests, obviously, Greenland should be part of the United States."

"We're a superpower. And under President Trump, we are going to conduct ourselves as a superpower."

Background:

  • Earlier, Miller's wife, Katie Miller, posted a map on social media showing Greenland covered with an American flag. Following this, US President Donald Trump reiterated the need for the US to establish control over the island.
  • In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that if the US were to attack another NATO country, it would mean the end of the Alliance and the post-World War II security system.
