Details: Sociologists noted that choosing a politician of the year from the international political scene usually causes Poles more difficulty than identifying the most prominent figure in domestic politics.
"In December 2025, just over two fifths of respondents (41%) had difficulty with this, while more than a quarter (27%) believed that none of the foreign politicians known to them had played a sufficiently significant role in international politics over the past 12 months to deserve the title," the study said. One percent of respondents refused to answer.
Poles awarded the title of world politician of the year 2025 to US President Donald Trump, an option chosen by 11% of respondents. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy came second, named by 5% of those surveyed. French President Emmanuel Macron completed the top three with 3% of the vote.
Other politicians were named only by a small number of respondents. About 1% mentioned European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, former US president Joe Biden, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Pope Leo XIV, US Vice President JD Vance, and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. Four percent of respondents named other figures.
Background:
- Most Poles do not expect the war in Ukraine to end in 2026.
- In addition, more than half of those surveyed oppose the introduction of a temporary tax to finance the modernisation of the Polish army.
