Details: Ukraine provided the Polish military with details of the airborne asset that Russia deployed during the attack.

The asset was also tracked by Polish airspace monitoring systems. The data obtained by the Polish military indicates that Russia used around 20 manoeuvring missiles and approximately 30 ballistic missiles in the nighttime attack, including one that may have been hypersonic. It was this missile that struck Lviv Oblast.

An RMF FM reporter learned that Polish Armed Forces Operational Command put ground-based air defence systems on combat alert in connection with the Russian attack.

Among the systems on alert were a Polish Patriot missile battery, which was already combat ready, and several Dutch units stationed near Rzeszów.

No fighter jets were scrambled, as they would have been ineffective against a modern hypersonic missile.

Background:

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a clear response from the world is needed, particularly from the United States, after Russia's large-scale strike on 8-9 January in which the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile was deployed.
  • Following the attack, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Ukraine's partners to take immediate steps to increase pressure on Moscow.
  • Sybiha also announced that Ukraine is convening urgent meetings of the UN Security Council and the NATO-Ukraine Council and taking relevant measures within the EU, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
  • Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, views Russia's second use of the Oreshnik missile as an escalation against Ukraine and a warning to Europe.
