Details: A journalist reminded Trump of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's reaction to the US operation in Venezuela, when Zelenskyy said: "If that's how it works with dictators, then the United States knows what to do next."
The journalist then asked Trump whether he would ever order the capture of Putin.
Quote: "I don't think it's going to be necessary. I've always had a great relationship with him. I'm disappointed. I settled eight wars..."
"I don't know if you know Peter, the last month they lost 31,000 people, many of them Russian soldiers, and the Russian economy is doing poorly. I think we're going to end up getting it settled. I wish we could have done it quicker."
Background:
- On 3 January, the US Army's Delta Force, an elite special forces unit, captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and took him out of the country. They were then taken to New York, where they were to face trial.
- Trump said that the US will govern Venezuela until a clear and safe transfer of power takes place there.
- On 5 January, Trump demanded that Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodríguez grant the United States full access to the country's resources, warning that refusal would come at a very high price.
