Details: This is not the first time Leo has publicly urged an end to the war in Ukraine.

In his first Christmas address to thousands of worshippers at St Peter's Square in Rome, the Pope called for peace in Ukraine. He asked for "the clamor of weapons cease" and urged both Russia and Ukraine to find the courage for "sincere, direct, and respectful dialogue" with the support of the international community.

Background: On 24 December, the Pope expressed "much sadness" over Russia's refusal to agree to a Christmas truce in the war against Ukraine.
