Iran sells nearly US$3bn worth of missiles to Russia, total contracts exceed US$4bn – Bloomberg

Iran has supplied Russia with ballistic and air defence missiles worth around US$2.7 billion for use in its war against Ukraine. The total value of Iran's military assistance to Moscow since late 2021 is estimated at over US$4 billion.

Details: Cooperation between Moscow and Tehran began even before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The first missile supply contracts were signed in October 2021.
The US$2.7 billion package included hundreds of Fath-360 short-range ballistic missiles, almost 500 other short-range ballistic missiles and around 200 surface-to-air missiles for air defence systems. In addition, Tehran shipped millions of rounds of ammunition and artillery shells to Russia.
A separate contract worth US$1.75 billion was signed in early 2023. It covered the supply of Shahed-136 kamikaze drones and the transfer of technology to produce them on Russian territory under the name Geran-2.
The Western official noted that these figures are not final, as further weapons deliveries are expected.
Despite Russia and Iran signing a strategic partnership agreement in January 2025, the document does not include any commitments on mutual defence. It is also worth noting that Moscow provided Tehran with no significant assistance during the 12-day war with Israel in June 2025.
Background:
- Since late December 2025, Iran has been gripped by mass protests that began over an economic crisis and escalated into an anti-government uprising. According to human rights groups, more than 500 people have been killed and over 10,000 arrested.
- Against the backdrop of these nationwide protests, the US, Sweden and France began evacuating their citizens, warning of a critical security situation in the country.
- US President Donald Trump voiced support for the Iranian people and threatened military intervention if the killing of civilians continues.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the events in Iran as an "uprising" and called on the international community to help Iranians overthrow a regime that supplies weapons to Russia.
