NATO–Ukraine Council discusses Russian attacks on energy sector and Oreshnik strike

A meeting of the NATO–Ukraine Council initiated by the Ukrainian side took place on Monday 12 January, during which participants discussed Russia's large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure as well as the use of the Oreshnik medium-range intercontinental ballistic missile.

Details: Sybiha said that Ukraine briefed its NATO allies on Russian attacks on critical energy infrastructure.

"Strengthening air defence, securing additional missiles, contributing to the PURL initiative and supporting defence production – including interceptor drones – remain urgent priorities," he stressed.

Sybiha also added that Ukraine expects "decisive action to ramp up support for Ukraine, increase pressure on Moscow, and bring a lasting peace closer".

Background:

Earlier, Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide announced the allocation of US$400 million in aid to Ukraine, which will be directed towards the energy sector and the functioning of the Ukrainian state.
In late December, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) transferred €63.82 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.
