"Monitoring systems did not detect the UAVs, but both workers had service protective equipment, which significantly helped. The locomotive also has additional protection," he added.

Pertsovskyi stressed that the railway workers were carrying out a purely civilian mission transporting energy equipment.

"We will provide all possible support to our colleagues and do everything we can to ensure their swift recovery. Meanwhile, our train drivers who were injured in Zhytomyr Oblast are already recovering under supervision at a hospital in the capital," said Pertsovskyi.

Background: Ukrainian Railways reported that its infrastructure in Odesa, Sumy and Volyn oblasts was damaged by Russian strikes on 1 January 2026.
