"Poland was hit by the most serious attack on its energy infrastructure, aimed at cutting power to citizens at the end of December. We were dealing with sabotage by Russia. Digital tanks are already here. We were close to a blackout," the minister said.

Earlier, Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka reported that a failed cyberattack on several power-generating facilities had taken place in the last days of 2025.

Gawkowski stated that Polish institutions are "well prepared".

"There is no reason to panic," he added.

Background:

  • In November, Gawkowski said that Poland experienced the highest number of cyberattacks in the EU.
  • Recently, sabotage acts occurred on Poland's railways. Following these incidents, the country deployed Territorial Defence Forces to patrol key parts of critical railway infrastructure.
  • At the end of November, a court approved the prosecutor's request to detain two Ukrainians suspected of the railway sabotage in absentia. The next day, the prosecutor issued arrest warrants for two men.
  • Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the country will seek the detention and extradition of the suspects, who are believed to have fled to Belarus.
