Details: Eight NATO member states have said they seek to strengthen security in the Arctic as a shared transatlantic interest, adding that the pre-coordinated Danish exercise Arctic Endurance, carried out with allied forces, addresses this need.

They stressed that the exercises pose no threat to anyone.

Quote: "We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Building on the process begun last week, we stand ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that we stand firmly behind.

Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty."

Background:

  • On 17 January, Trump announced that from 1 February, Washington will impose tariffs on a number of countries that oppose his stance on Greenland.
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen defended Europe's backing of Denmark and Greenland and cautioned against the fallout from Donald Trump's decisions.
  • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the tariffs, announced by Trump in retaliation for Europe defending Denmark, as the wrong approach, and French President Emmanuel Macron emphasised that Europe would not yield to intimidation.
