Details: Trump said the phone call with Rutte was "very good": "I agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos."
"As I expressed to everyone, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back – on that, everyone agrees!" Trump said.
It is worth noting that stressing Greenland's importance for national and global security does not necessarily amount to insisting that Greenland must become part of the United States, as Trump has often done in the past.
However, he also posted an illustration on his social media platform depicting him planting a US flag on Greenland, which is marked as US territory from 2026.
The US president emphasised that the United States is the most powerful country in the world: "We are the only power that can ensure peace throughout the world – and it is done, quite simply, through strength!"
Background:
- Denmark and Greenland have proposed deploying a NATO mission on the island.
- Media outlets have written that US President Donald Trump suggested that a European military presence on the island would be a provocation against him.
- Nevertheless, Trump advised Europe to focus on the Russo-Ukrainian war rather than Greenland.
