Details: IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that this morning several Ukrainian electrical substations vital for nuclear safety were hit amid intense military activity.

"The IAEA is actively following developments in order to assess the impact on nuclear safety," Grossi added.

Background:

  • In December, Serhii Tarakanov, the director of the Chornobyl NPP, said that another Russian strike could collapse the internal radiation shelter at the power plant.
  • "If a missile or drone hits it directly, or even falls somewhere nearby, for example, an Iskander, God forbid, it will cause a mini-earthquake in the area.
  • No one can guarantee the protective structure stays in place after that. That is the main threat," he said.
