"Emergency power outages are in effect in Kyiv. Utility workers and power engineers are operating around the clock to return heat and electricity to residents' homes," he said.

Background:

  • Following a Russian strike on the night of 19-20 January, Klitschko reported that 5,635 high-rise buildings in Kyiv had been left without heating. The left bank of the city also experienced a temporary water outage.
  • On 9 January, Klitschko urged residents of the capital to temporarily leave the city where possible, to places with alternative sources of power and heating, as half of Kyiv's buildings were left without heating following the Russian attack.
  • He later reported that around 600,000 people had left the capital during January.
