Ukraine's foreign minister welcomes France's detention of sanctioned Russian tanker in Mediterranean Sea

Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha has welcomed reports that France has detained a sanctioned Russian tanker in the Mediterranean Sea.

Details: Sybiha said France's actions were "exactly the strength and resolve that are needed when dealing with aggressive and lawless terrorist state, Russia".

"The only language they understand. We welcome France's resolute leadership that demonstrates the strength of Europe and our shared principles," he added.

Background:

  • Earlier on 22 January, Macron announced that the French Navy had intercepted a sanctioned tanker from Russia's shadow fleet in the Mediterranean.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Europe to stop Russian oil tankers during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on the same day.
