Ukraine receives generators worth €3.7m from EU

The European Commission has announced the delivery of 447 backup generators worth €3.7 million from the EU's strategic reserves to help restore electricity supply to hospitals, shelters and critical services in Ukraine.

Details: The generators from the rescEU strategic reserves, located in Poland, will be distributed by Ukraine's Ministry for Communities and Territorial Development in cooperation with the Ukrainian Red Cross to the most affected hromadas. [A hromada is an administrative unit designating a village, several villages, or a town, and their adjacent territories – ed.]

The delivery is intended to meet urgent needs and builds on the EU's continued support for Ukraine's energy resilience.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, the EU has sent nearly 10,000 generators to Ukraine through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).

"Russia's continued attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure are deliberately depriving civilians of heat, light and basic services in the middle of a harsh winter. They are designed to break Ukrainian spirit. They will fail. Europe responds with action, not words. The new shipment of generators is already on the way, adding to more than 9,500 EU-provided generators already providing power across Ukraine," said Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management.

Background:

• It was also reported that, by decision of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, 379 generators and 18 heaters from Poland's State Agency for Strategic Reserves will be delivered to Ukraine in the coming days.
• Meanwhile, the Lithuanian government announced an urgent transfer of 90 generators worth more than €2 million.
• Azerbaijan has sent Ukraine five transformers, generators and other equipment for energy needs.
