DIU says John Patrick was killed during what it described as a "meat assault" near the settlement of Novoselivka in the Kramatorsk district in Donetsk Oblast.

The soldier reportedly had only a weapon, ammunition and a scrap of paper listing a unit number, a phone number and the commander's name. DIU added that he did not speak Russian.

According to data recovered from the man's electronic devices, his basic training lasted just one week, after which he was sent to the front line without delay. He was wounded and died slowly in a forest strip with no evacuation provided by Russian forces.

Quote: "The aggressor state Russia is scaling up the criminal practice of recruiting foreign citizens and labour migrants into its armed forces through deception or pressure – foreigners are offered rear-area service or threatened with problems with the police.

Defence Intelligence of Ukraine warns foreign citizens against travelling to Russia and doing any work on its territory, especially illegal work. A trip to Russia is a real chance to end up in an assault company without training and without a chance to survive."
