Ukrainian energy company explains why Kyiv faces severe power shortages

Kyiv has lost part of its own electricity generation capacity because Russia has been systematically striking the capital's energy sector since the autumn.
Source: DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy company
Details: DTEK said that the strikes were targeted at generation facilities and key electricity transmission hubs.
Quote: "As a result, Kyiv has lost part of its own source of power and becomes more dependent on electricity from other oblasts. The enemy is also trying to disrupt this transmission and isolate the city from the country's power grid."
More details: DTEK added that freezing weather is exacerbating the situation. When there is no heating, people are forced to warm their homes using electric appliances.
Quote: "In the hours when power returns, thousands of devices switch on at once. Strained networks buckle under the load, triggering outages, particularly on the left bank [of Kyiv]."
Background:
- As of the morning of Tuesday 27 January, more than 900 apartment buildings in the capital remained without heating after the Russian attack on the night of 24-25 January.
- To restore centralised heating in some parts of Kyiv, officials have temporarily limited hot water supply, redirecting thermal capacity to bring heat back to buildings.
