Zelenskyy speaks of "good signals" from Europe on stepping up pressure on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is receiving "good signals" from Europe about European countries' readiness to keep increasing pressure on Russia to bring the war to an end.

Details: Zelenskyy said that everyone understands this is Russia's war and that "the responsibility to end the war also lies with Russia".

Quote: "And Russia must face the pressure. We are now getting good signals from Europe about Europeans' readiness to step up pressure on the aggressor."

More details: Zelenskyy said that it is important to increase pressure, in particular on Russia's tanker fleet and on the entire infrastructure used for Russian oil exports.

Quote: "This will greatly help all of us in Europe if Russian revenues are cut even deeper. We already see the aggressor's colossal new problems with the federal budget, as well as inflation and economic indicators. These are all good and right signals that peace can, at last, be achieved."

• On 22 December 2025, the Council of the European Union extended economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, meaning they remain in force until 31 July 2026.
• The EU plans to approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia by 24 February 2026, the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
