Italian foreign minister: We support Ukraine's membership in EU, but the Balkans take priority

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has commented on the idea of accelerating Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

Details: Tajani said that Italy supports Ukraine's membership of the EU but added that the Balkan countries must join the European Union first.
Quote: "We are in favour of Ukraine's accession, but first there are the Balkans, to which we have a commitment and which are a priority for us. On 3 March, we will host a meeting of the Friends of the Balkans in Rome. On 1 April, we will be in Belgrade with German Minister [Johann] Wadephul to send a message of support to Serbia."
Details: Tajani added that Italy would assist Ukraine with accession to the EU, "which has a long way to go".
Background:
- Previously, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that many member states share President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's desire for Ukraine to join the EU in 2027.
- Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Ukraine's accession to the EU in 2027 is impossible.
