Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that Russian forces are currently avoiding targeted missile and attack-drone strikes on the energy sector but have concentrated on attacks on logistics.

Quote: "Over the past 24 hours, there were new Russian attacks on energy facilities in frontline and border hromadas. At the same time, there were no targeted strikes by Russian missiles or Shahed drones against energy infrastructure. [A hromada is an administrative unit designating a village, several villages, or a town, and their adjacent territories – ed.]
As on previous days, the Russian army remains focused on terror against our logistics – primarily railway infrastructure. In particular, there were strikes in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and in [the city of] Zaporizhzhia, specifically targeting railway facilities."
Details: Zelenskyy said that a conference call set out specific tasks for the commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the defence minister of Ukraine and the CEO of the state-run railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways). He said he expected them to be carried out by Monday.
Background:
- US President Donald Trump said that he had personally asked Russian leader Vladimir Putin to stop attacks on Ukraine for a week due to the freezing cold weather.
- Pro-war Russian social media channels reported on 29 January that Moscow ordered its forces on 28 January to stop strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
- Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the negotiating teams in the UAE discussed halting attacks on energy facilities.
- Ukraine has recorded very low temperatures in recent days. Following a large-scale Russian attack on 24 January and damage to critical infrastructure, half of the capital's housing stock was left without heating. As of 2 February, more than 200 buildings in Kyiv remain without heating.
- Ukrenergo, Ukraine's state-owned electricity transmission operator, is forced to impose emergency power cuts almost every day.
