Details: At the same time, Russian forces advanced near the settlements of Udachne, Hryshyne and Pryvillia in Donetsk Oblast.
Background:
- It was reported on 12 December that Ukraine's defence forces carried out a successful counterattack near the city of Kupiansk and encircled a Russian grouping in the city.
- Since October, Russian occupation forces have repeatedly claimed that they have taken Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast, while Ukrainian troops say they continue to hold the city.
- On 2 December 2025, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin publicly "invited" foreign journalists, including Ukrainian ones, to visit the cities of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk to show what he claimed was Russian control of the cities.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Kupiansk front on 12 December, where he recorded a video beside the city's half-destroyed entrance sign and congratulated Ukraine's Ground Forces on their special day.
- On 30 December, Ukraine's Ground Forces posted photos of Kupiansk, which had been destroyed by the Russians who attempted to capture it.
