Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said that Ukraine is an enemy of his country.

Details: Orbán claimed that Ukraine is constantly pressuring Brussels to cut Hungary off from cheap Russian energy, which he said would push up utility prices for Hungarian consumers.

"Anyone who says such a thing is an enemy of Hungary, so Ukraine is our enemy," Orbán said.

He added that Hungarian families will be paying an extra 1 million forints (about €2,600) a year for utilities if utility prices are not kept low.

Orbán said that while Ukraine's proximity to Hungary means that cooperation is necessary, Ukraine should not be allowed to join the EU.

Background:

  • On 2 February, Hungary filed a lawsuit with the Court of Justice of the European Union seeking to challenge the REPowerEU regulation, which prohibits the import of Russian gas into the EU.
  • The EU is set to implement legislation it has adopted on a complete phase-out of Russian gas by 2027, despite Hungary's lawsuit.
  • In a recent interview with European Pravda, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called Orbán a threat to his own people and to ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpattia Oblast (Transcarpathia) in Ukraine's west.
  • Sybiha also explained his recent harsh remarks about Hungary and said Ukraine is preparing for various scenarios after the Hungarian parliamentary elections scheduled for April.
