Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said the Ukrainian and Russian leaders should meet in person to address the toughest remaining issues in peace talks, and that only US President Donald Trump can stop the war.

Details: Sybiha said Ukraine hopes to galvanise steps towards ending the four-year war and leverage the current progress in the US-brokered negotiations before other factors intervene, including campaigning ahead of the US midterm Congressional elections in November.

Quote from Sybiha: "Only Trump can stop the war."

More details: According to Sybiha, only "a few" points remain unresolved from a 20-point peace plan that formed the basis of recent trilateral talks. He describes these as "the most sensitive and most difficult to be dealt with at the leaders' level".

Quote: "My assessment is we have momentum, that's true. We need consolidation or mobilisation of these peace efforts, and we're ready to speed up."

Background:

  • Zelenskyy said the US has proposed that Russia's war against Ukraine be ended before the summer, as they will have a different priority later on, namely the US congressional elections.
  • He also confirmed that the territorial issue and the issue of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remained unresolved during talks in Abu Dhabi.
  • Zelenskyy also said that US representatives in Abu Dhabi have once again proposed that an energy ceasefire be introduced.
