The United Kingdom will join the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), an initiative under which NATO allies fund the purchase of US-made weapons for Ukraine.

Details: The UK has agreed to procure American weapons for Ukraine, becoming the latest ally to join NATO's initiative to supply critical arms to Kyiv.

"I'm pleased to confirm the UK is committing £150 million [US$205 million] to PURL," Healey said.

"Together we must provide Ukraine with the critical air defence it needs in response to Putin's brutal onslaught," he added.

The PURL was created last summer to maintain a continuous supply of US weapons to Ukraine. During Donald Trump's presidency, new military assistance from Washington ran out, but the White House is ready to sell weapons funded by other allies.

Background:

  • The United States is expecting NATO member states to announce new pledges to purchase American weapons for Ukraine under the PURL programme when NATO defence ministers meet in Brussels on 12 February.
  • Alona Hetmanchuk, Ukraine's ambassador to NATO, has listed the countries that have made the largest contributions to the purchase of critically needed US weapons for Ukraine, including air defence systems, under the PURL mechanism.
  • NATO member states will continue to fund the PURL programme despite the recent crisis in European-US relations.
