Both served with the 423rd Guards Motor Rifle Regiment (military unit No. 91701) of the 4th Kantemirovskaya Guards Tank Division of the Russian Armed Forces.

Documents found at the scene indicate that they signed contracts with Russia's Armed Forces in the second half of 2025 – Kolawole on 29 August and Udoka on 28 September.

Udoka received no training. On 3 October, five days after signing the contract, he was assigned to a unit and sent the same day to temporarily Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine.

No documents were found confirming that Kolawole had received military training, but it is highly likely he did not. He is survived by his wife and three children in Nigeria.

Both the Nigerian citizens were killed in late November during an attempt to assault Ukrainian positions in Luhansk Oblast. They did not enter a firefight as both were killed by a drone strike.

Quote from DIU: "Defence Intelligence of Ukraine warns foreign nationals against travelling to Russia and taking any job in the territory of the aggressor state. If you go to Russia you have a real chance of ending up in a 'suicide' assault unit and ultimately rotting in Ukrainian soil."
