Starmer and Trump discuss progress of Geneva talks on Ukraine

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump have had a phone call to discuss, among other topics, the US-mediated talks in Geneva on 17 February aimed at resolving Russia's war against Ukraine.

Details: In addition to Ukraine, Starmer and Trump also discussed progress in the Geneva talks on Iran's nuclear programme and the situation in Gaza.

In the context of Gaza, Starmer stressed the importance of ensuring continued access for humanitarian aid.

  • Rustem Umierov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine and head of the Ukrainian delegation, said the talks focused on practical issues and the mechanics of possible solutions.
  • He said once the joint session concluded, the teams continued their work in groups, addressing specific topics.
  • Meanwhile, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported that the Geneva talks had "got stuck", adding that the reason was the positions presented by Russia's chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky.
  • It was also reported that the Russian delegation called the Geneva talks "very tense".
