Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico has said he will move to stop his country's electricity exports to Ukraine unless Kyiv restores Russian oil transit to Slovakia by Monday 23 February.

Details: Fico said that unless Ukraine resumes transit of Russian oil to Slovakia by Monday 23 February, which previously flowed via the damaged Druzhba pipeline, he will "instruct the relevant Slovak companies to suspend emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine on the same day".

Quote: "If Zelenskyy thinks that blackmailing Slovakia over oil will bring Ukraine closer to the EU, he is gravely mistaken."

More details: Electricity imports from Slovakia to Ukraine in February 2026 made up about 18% of Ukraine's overall import structure.

Transport of Russian crude oil through the Druzhba pipeline via Ukraine stopped on 27 January following large-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Slovakia and Hungary, after losing this source of imports, declared an emergency in the oil sector and accused Kyiv of refusing to repair the pipeline.

Both countries have already stopped exports of diesel fuel to Ukraine.

Background:

  • Hungary has also threatened to stop exports of electricity and gas to Ukraine if Kyiv does not restore operation of the Druzhba pipeline.
  • Fico wants to send a monitoring mission to the site of damage to the Druzhba pipeline in the Ukrainian city of Brody to obtain an expert assessment of the damage.
