It was known for its modern teaching approaches and considered one of the best schools in Donetsk Oblast, earning the status of Mariupol's flagship educational institution, the city council said.

On 10 March 2022, 70% of the building was destroyed by an aerial bomb. The school has stood in ruins ever since.

In total, 54 schools – around 90% of all educational institutions in Mariupol – were damaged in the spring of 2022. Nine were completely destroyed and 19 sustained critical damage.

School No. 66 is currently teaching children both remotely and in person in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Six Mariupol schools are operating remotely after being forced to relocate due to the war, and Mariupol State University is holding in-person classes in Kyiv.

Background: The Russian curriculum is being imposed on almost 2,000 schools in Ukraine's temporarily occupied territories, shaping the education of over 582,000 children.
