Canada announces new military aid for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia

Canada has announced a new CA$2 billion (about US$1.4 billion) package of military aid for Ukraine and imposed new sanctions on Russia, including measures targeting the shadow fleet and a lower price cap on Russian oil.

Details: The statement said the US$1.4 billion in military assistance for fiscal year 2026-27 will help provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the equipment and capabilities needed to defend Ukraine's territory.

Canada is also donating over 400 armoured vehicles to Ukraine, including 66 General Dynamics LAV 6 vehicles and 383 Senator armoured vehicles manufactured by Roshel.
Background:
- On 6 February, Ukraine's Defence Ministry reported that Canada is set to supply Ukraine with AIM missiles to reinforce Ukraine's air defence capabilities and enhance its ability to counter cruise missiles.
- At the end of December, Canada announced CA$2.5 billion (about US$1.68 billion) in economic assistance for Ukraine.
