Romania's Ministry of National Defence said radar tracked a drone that briefly entered Romanian airspace.

Two F-16 fighter jets took off from Feteşti Air Base at 17:50 to monitor the situation. The drone entered Romanian airspace near the settlement of Sfântu Gheorghe and left it north of the city of Sulina, flying over territorial waters. The ministry said there was no threat to people's lives.

The Ro-Alert message warned border residents of the potential risk of falling debris. Emergency services received four calls from locals seeking further information.

The Ministry of National Defence condemned Russia's attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, saying: "These actions are a serious violation of international law and a threat to regional security."

Background:

  • In January, debris from an unidentified drone was found off the coast of Romania.
  • In response to the drone threat, Romania decided to increase the number of service personnel in areas along the border with Ukraine.
