Behind the news about a breakthrough in the Russian defensive lines on the Oleksandrivka front lie several months of work. In particular, assault units entered the Huliaipole front back in late 2025 to deliver a preparatory strike against the Russians.

Quote from Dmytro "Perun" Filatov, commander of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment:"The offensive actions on the Oleksandrika front and near Huliaipole are actually part of a single plan. But it was not concentrated specifically around Huliaipole. For example, we moved into the area between Dobropillia (Zaporizhzhia Oblast – ed.) and Nove Zaporizhzhia to deliver a flanking strike against the enemy, to pressure them there and create the conditions for the further liberation of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast."

Details: According to Filatov, the 1st Regiment managed to break through the Russians' defences and advance 12 km deep into Russian positions using vehicles.

Despite the impressive result, Filatov described these actions as "minor successes" and stressed that they should not be considered a new counteroffensive.

"These are offensive actions aimed at improving our tactical position and stabilising the front line in the area where the enemy was redeploying its forces. The enemy viewed this as its pre-spring campaign – I emphasise, pre-spring. I am confident that the spring campaign will begin, first of all, on the Pokrovsk front – after they build a clear defensive line. And then on the Lyman front," Perun said.

According to Anton Derliuk, commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 95th Airmobile Brigade, which is also participating in the operation, he moved his unit to the Oleksandrivka front in late January. His task was to push the Russian forces out of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.

"At first, under the cover of snow and fog, we moved into the enemy's rear and destroyed their reconnaissance units and Mavic drone operators so they could not see what was happening along their front line. Then we mopped up the area we had quickly passed through. In essence, we carried out sabotage operations. We surrounded about 60 Russian soldiers, captured three POWs, and the rest were wiped out," Derliuk said, adding that the Russians realised they were encircled about a week later.

The 2nd Battalion of the 95th Airmobile Brigade also advanced 10-11 km beyond the line of contact.

Derliuk stressed that this was an infantry operation, where "everything depends on the training of the soldiers".

Earlier, the president and the commander-in-chief said that the area of territories recaptured or cleared on the Oleksandrivka front amounts to 300–450 sq km.

The names of the settlements that Ukraine's defence forces managed to liberate are still being kept secret.

Ukrainska Pravda suggests that Ukrainian forces initially advanced through the southernmost villages of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast – Vyshneve, Yehorivka and Pershotravneve – and later moved into Zaporizhzhia Oblast, pushing Russian forces away from Novoiehorivka, Novoivanivka, Pavlivka and other settlements.

However, whether Ukraine's defence forces will be able to consolidate their positions and hold these villages remains an open question.
