Details: The sanctions will remain in place for around 2,600 individuals and entities targeted in response to Russia's ongoing unjustified and unprovoked military aggression against Ukraine.
The current restrictive measures include travel bans for individuals, asset freezes and a ban on making funds or other economic resources available to the listed individuals and entities.
Quote from the press release: "In the context of the sanctions' review, the Council also decided not to renew the listings of two individuals and to remove five deceased persons from the list.
The EU remains determined to maintain and increase pressure on Russia to stop its brutal war of aggression and engage in meaningful negotiations towards peace."
Background:
- Slovakia reportedly tried to remove two Russian oligarchs, Mikhail Fridman and Alisher Usmanov, from the EU sanctions list. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is said to have asked Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to remove Usmanov.
- However, according to media reports, by Saturday morning, no country had raised objections to the sanctions list.
