Details: The press release notes that the Council of the EU has added Colonel-General Alexander Chaiko, the former commander of the Russian Eastern Military District, to the list. He was the commander-in-chief in Ukraine during the Russian invasion of Bucha.
The new list also includes other Russian military personnel who commanded Russian troops in Ukraine at the start of the full-scale war and committed atrocities against residents of Bucha and the neighbouring towns of Hostomel, Irpin and Borodianka.
Quote from the statement: "The troops under their command were also involved in looting, torturing and forcing civilians to clear up the bodies of dead Russian soldiers. One of the individuals on the list is also responsible for the adoption of a child from the Russian-occupied part of Donetsk Oblast who was illegally deported to Russia."
Consequently, the assets of these nine individuals have been frozen, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with funds. Furthermore, they are subject to a ban on entering EU member states or transiting through their territory.
Background:
- The EU recently extended its targeted sanctions against Russia, covering around 2,600 individuals and entities.
- It was previously reported that EU foreign ministers plan to hold a meeting in Bucha, Kyiv Oblast, to mark the fourth anniversary of the town's liberation from the Russians.
- EU foreign ministers will also discuss the possibility of banning entry to the European Union for Russians who have taken part or are taking part in the war against Ukraine at the meeting in Brussels of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday 16 March.
