Quote: "I think they're getting close, but I've been saying that for a while. I've settled eight wars. All of them should have been more difficult than this one. This should have been the easiest one."

Details: Trump also reiterated that Zelenskyy and Putin are "two people that truly hate each other".

"Hatred is not good for making deals," he added.

Previously: Earlier, Zelenskyy said after a briefing from Ukraine's negotiating team that there had been no real progress in the talks due to Russia's unwillingness to move towards peace.

Background:

  • The Financial Times reported that Trump is losing interest in the negotiations on a peaceful settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine, as he is focused on Iran.
  • Zelenskyy told journalists last week that the country is ready for a new round of talks on ending the war, but venue and timing have still not been agreed because of differing positions of the US and Russia.
  • Zelenskyy has also insisted on the need for a meeting with Trump, noting that some issues remain at a standstill.
  • He also believes Trump prefers to act as a mediator rather than take sides in the war caused by Russia's illegal aggression against Ukraine.
