Details: In response to journalists' questions, Peskov dismissed a New York Times report which claims that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had been willing to strike a peace deal with Ukraine but changed his mind after the US and Israel launched their operation against Iran, calling it "fiction".
Peskov said previous rounds of negotiations achieved only partial progress and key issues of importance to Russia remain unresolved.
He stressed that the main focus remains territorial issues, where, according to the Kremlin, "there has been no progress and there is still none".
Quote: "However, this does not mean that Russia is losing interest in the negotiations. On the contrary, we remain open, stay in contact with the US side, and hope that the next round of talks will be held as soon as circumstances allow."
Background:
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine is taking the peace negotiations with Russia seriously and that discussions would be more effective if they were held at the level of national leaders.
- On 19 March, Peskov said that the pause in talks between Ukraine, the US and Russia is temporary and could end once all the sides, primarily the Americans, have aligned their schedules.
