Details: The minister announced that Canada is adding a further one hundred tankers from Russia's shadow fleet to its sanctions list.
The government noted that the announced sanctions are aimed at undermining Russia's ability to finance its military operations against Ukraine.
"Canada remains unwavering in its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and its people, who are forcefully defending their rights in the face of Putin's corrosive and aggressive actions. Until Russia halts its aggression, Canada will continue to intensify pressure through sanctions in coordination with allies and partners," Anand stated.
In total, Canada has imposed sanctions against over 600 vessels for their involvement in transporting goods and products on behalf of Russia.
Background:
- On 24 February, the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, the Canadian government introduced new sanctions against Russia, including against 100 vessels from its shadow fleet.
- On 26 March, the UK government authorised the military to board and seize vessels from Russia's so-called shadow fleet transiting through British waters.
