Quote: "Yes, we have some obstacles on the way when it comes to the 20th sanctions package as well as the disbursement of the loan. The work is ongoing to overcome these obstacles, but unfortunately today I don't have good news."

Details: Kallas expressed hope that the decisions would be adopted at the next European Council meeting.

Background:

  • In February, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said Budapest would block the EU's 20th sanctions package against Russia, claiming that Ukraine was deliberately not repairing the Druzhba oil pipeline.
  • Hungary has also blocked a €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine by refusing to approve one of the three documents adopted by the European Parliament required to release the funds – amendments to the EU's long-term budget for 2021-2027.
  • Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico later suggested he might join efforts to block the €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine in the future.
