Russia deliberately directs Ukrainian drones into Baltic states, foreign ministry says
The drone incidents recorded in the Baltic states over the past few days were deliberately caused by Russia, Ukrainian intelligence has reported.
Source: a statement by Andrii Sybiha, Ukrainian Foreign Minister, during a joint press conference with Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, as reported by European Pravda
Details: Sybiha said Ukraine had never directed drones against the Baltic states. He also stressed that Ukraine is working with partners to protect countries from such incidents in the future.
Quote: "I can state with confidence that in all these cases those were fully deliberate and targeted actions by Russia.
Available intelligence data indicate that Russia was intentionally diverting drones into the Baltic states in order to use these incidents for its information objectives.
I am grateful to all partners of Ukraine, the Baltic states and also Finland, who together with Ukraine are stating clearly that the cause of these incidents lies in Russia. It is Russia's war that created all these threats and it is Russia that has to be forced into peace."
Background:
- In recent days, three drones identified as stray Ukrainian aircraft were found in different locations in south-eastern Finland. Two were confirmed to have crashed on 28 March, while another was found on 31 March on the ice of a lake near the Russian border. In all cases, no one was injured.
- In Estonia, another stray, supposedly Ukrainian drone that had crashed there was found again on 31 March. In total, around 10 aircraft may have violated the country's airspace.
- The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry apologised to the Baltic states and Finland for the incidents and said they were most likely the result of Russian electronic warfare systems interference.
