Details: The border guards said experts were examining the device.

The Finnish Border Guard Service found the drone on the frozen lake of Pyhäjärvi, on the border between Parikkala and Kitee, on the morning of Tuesday 31 March.

The Central Criminal Police of Finland launched a preliminary investigation into the case. Police warned that a short loud noise might be heard near the crash site as they worked to disarm it.

Later in the day, police said the drone had been neutralised by means of a controlled explosion.

Last weekend, two drones crashed in the south-east of Finland.

Background:

  • During a week of sustained Ukrainian strikes on Russian ports on the Baltic Sea, which play a key role in oil exports, several strike UAVs strayed into the territory of the Baltic states and Finland.
  • Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has apologised to its partner states for the incidents.
  • Another stray drone thought to be Ukrainian crashed in Estonia and was found on 31 March. In total, around 10 aircraft may have violated the country's airspace.
  • Meanwhile Moscow is pushing the narrative that these countries have supposedly allowed Ukraine to use their airspace to carry out strikes on Russian ports.
