US President Donald Trump has said he is seriously considering the possibility of the United States withdrawing from NATO and again described the alliance as a "paper tiger".

Details: Trump was asked whether he would reconsider US membership in NATO after the conflict in the Middle East.

Quote: "Oh yes, I would say [it's] beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way."

Details: Trump also once again criticised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for refusing to join the US-Israeli war against Iran, suggesting that the Royal Navy was not up for the task.

"You don't even have a navy. You're too old and had aircraft carriers that didn't work," he said.

The US president also praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio for previously expressing opposition to continued US membership in NATO.

Background:

  • Earlier, Trump said the US could abandon its commitment to defend NATO allies if they were attacked.
  • He also described NATO as a "paper tiger" and said the US would remember the allies' inaction in the war against Iran.
