Details: The conversation took place soon after Trump said he is seriously considering pulling the US out of NATO.
Stubb said he discussed NATO, Ukraine and Iran with Trump. He described it as a "constructive discussion and exchange of ideas".
Quote: "Problems are there to be solved, pragmatically."
More details: Tensions between the US and other NATO member states have intensified since the start of the US-Israeli operation against Iran. The US president is insisting that NATO allies should join military action to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran has blocked.
Background:
- Trump has said he is seriously considering the possibility of the US withdrawing from NATO and once again described the alliance as a "paper tiger".
- Earlier, Trump said the US might walk away from its commitment to defend NATO allies if they are attacked.
- France responded to Trump's threats by saying that the Alliance was established to ensure security in the Euro-Atlantic region, not for operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in response that NATO is "the single most effective alliance".
