Details: Orbán said he had discussed the incident with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

The prime minister added that Serbian law enforcement officers had discovered "a powerful explosive device, along with the equipment needed to detonate it" at a gas infrastructure facility.

Quote: "I have convened an emergency defence council for this afternoon."

Background:

  • Vučić had earlier stated that if the sabotage attempt had succeeded, Hungary and northern Serbia would have been left without gas supplies.
  • NATO member states are increasingly concerned about hybrid attacks targeting the Alliance's energy sector amid the Russo-Ukrainian war.
  • In addition, Financial Times reported that recruiters and propagandists formerly working for the Russian private military company Wagner have become a key channel for Kremlin-backed sabotage operations in Europe.
