Ukraine's Security Service, the FBI and EU counterparts uncover major Russian espionage via Wi-Fi routers
The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), the FBI, Polish counterintelligence agencies and EU law enforcement bodies have carried out a joint cyber operation targeting Russian intelligence activities.

Details: The operation established that Russian military intelligence services had been hacking home and office Wi-Fi routers in Ukraine, EU countries and the United States on a large scale. Devices with outdated security settings were primarily targeted.
After gaining access to the routers, attackers redirected internet traffic through their own network of DNS servers. This enabled them to intercept passwords, authentication tokens, emails and other data, even when transmitted via secure protocols.
The data collected was intended for use in cyberattacks, information operations and intelligence gathering. Particular attention was paid to data belonging to government officials, military personnel and defence industry employees.
As part of the operation, more than 100 servers were blocked and hundreds of routers in Ukraine were taken out of Russian control. This has reduced the capabilities of Russian intelligence and prevented potential equipment sabotage.
The SSU said the investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement working to identify all those involved in the cyberattacks.
The agency also urged users to check their routers, update their software and change access passwords. If security updates are no longer available, users are advised to replace their devices with models still supported by the manufacturer. It is also recommended to disable remote access via the internet and review settings for any suspicious changes.
